Patti Smith wants fans to know she’s “fine” after making headlines for an onstage collapse at a concert Wednesday.
Smith was at the Cultura Artística Theater in São Paulo, Brazil when she suddenly collapsed. She took to Instagram earlier this week to clarify the incident.
“This is letting everyone know that I am fine. A grossly exaggerated account is being spread by the press and social media,” Smith wrote in a lengthy Instagram caption. “I had some post migraine dizziness. Had a small incident, left the stage, and returned 10 minutes later and talked to the people, told them I was fine and sang.”
Smith directed fans to “trust” that she’s OK after the incident made headlines: “I was checked out by an excellentDoctor and was absolutely fine. Please do not accept any other story,” adding that “with all the strife in the world, this explainable incident does not merit so much attention.”
“I’ve always thought and think even more that the most beautiful thing about it is the people,” Smith said.
“You’ve been so patient and unfortunately I got sick, and the doctor said I can’t finish so we will have to figure something,” she told fans. “I feel very badly.”
Smith is currently working with Berlin-based “experimental sound collective” Soundwalk Collective on their shared “Correspondences” project, which is slated to run through Feb. 22.
The poet and singer thanked Swift last April on Instagram after being named-dropped on the “Cruel Summer” pop star’s latest album. On the titular track from “The Tortured Poets Department,” Swift sings, “You’re not Dylan Thomas. I’m not Patti Smith. This ain’t the Chelsea Hotel. We’re modern idiots.”
